Art

I've recently started using HabitRPG.com and it's been excellent for kicking myself into gear in the morning and getting things done. One of the habits I've picked up is drawing something, anything, everyday.

I don't honestly remember the last time I just drew something that wasn't a sitemap or layout for a website. I used to draw, and paint, all the time, and to be honest it's very refreshing to just do some quick sketches. Now, I think they're crap, but it's at least something.

While many say that you don't really need to draw to be a designer, I think it helps tremendously, especially when it comes to loosening up your brain to generate new ideas. I'm starting to look around more for inspiration for some new sketches, even if it's just the board game figurines sitting on a table (see the last sketch below).

I've always had some sort of sketchbook running, generally one too big to carry around without purposefully saying "I'm going to draw today" but now I'm rocking a little book that lives in my bag. This plus the fact that I just need a pen, means I always have a place to put sketches, ideas, thoughts, etc. quickly.

Speaking of pens, I'm not the only one who is very particular on writing/drawing utensils, right? I'm quite attached to Uniball Vision Needles, and in fact have ordered some from the States to ship over here. I find sketching with a pen means every line is permanent, and therefore every line is important.
