ashleyidesign News and Updates

I've been riding a wave of project ideas lately. Not just personal projects or client work but things built to help others. In the end that's all I want to do anyway. I figured by sharing them with you I’d be more committed to making headway on them in 2015.

The first you'll probably find silly, but it's building an online community for board gamers here in Penang. Right now the community is spread across various and overlapping Facebook groups. I'd like to change that by creating a website for gaming nights, selling games and talking about gaming in general. I've already started to work on this, having built a mailing list of interested parties and a landing page to explain a bit about what I’m doing. The next step is to design and build the basic site and start generating content.

My second project idea is to create a job board for marketing professionals in Malaysia, focusing on Penang to start.  I've got a few ideas brainstormed and written down and some next steps clarified. This idea stemmed from inbound.org, the HubSpot run and oriented job board and online community. While inbound.org could be used here as well, I’d like to build something more targeted for the audience here. I want to consider the differing languages, target markets and social media channels.

The final project idea I’ve been kicking around in my head is a project management system dedicated to serving individual freelancers. I’ve found most systems put an emphasis on collaboration. Rarely do you find yourself needing to bring a customer into a project management or communication tool outside of email and phone calls. I know I wouldn't want to subject my clients to learn new tools. The easiest it is for them, the better. Thus, a solution is needed where the focus is on managing a multitude of projects at the same time. This is really on the backburner as I’d ultimately need to work with a software developer to build.

I don't have a set timeline for any of these since I’m getting busier and busier. I would like to make an effort to put a dent in them this year, though, especially the first two as I’m set to move back to the US in September.

So, what do you think? Have any project ideas of your own kicking around you'd like to share?
